Why Wheel Alignment Matters

Why Wheel Alignment Matters More Than You Think

Wheel alignment service

Wheel alignment is one of those vehicle maintenance tasks that many drivers overlook — until something goes noticeably wrong. But the truth is, even a small misalignment can have a big impact on your tyres, your fuel efficiency, and your safety on the road. Understanding what wheel alignment is, why it matters, and when to get it done can save you hundreds of dollars and keep your vehicle performing at its best.

What Is Wheel Alignment?

Wheel alignment refers to the adjustment of your vehicle's suspension — the system that connects your car to its wheels. It is not about adjusting the wheels or tyres themselves, but rather the angles at which your tyres make contact with the road. There are three main angles that technicians measure and adjust during an alignment.

Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the tyre when viewed from the front of the vehicle. Too much tilt in either direction causes uneven wear on the inner or outer edge of the tyre. Caster is the angle of your steering axis when viewed from the side. It affects steering stability and how your wheels return to centre after a turn. Toe refers to whether the front of your tyres point inward or outward when viewed from above. Incorrect toe settings are one of the most common causes of rapid, uneven tyre wear.

Warning Signs You Need an Alignment

There are several telltale signs that your wheels may be out of alignment. The most common is your vehicle pulling to one side when you are driving on a straight, flat road. If you notice that you have to constantly correct the steering to keep the car going straight, that is a clear indicator.

Another sign is uneven tyre wear. If one side of your tyre is wearing down significantly faster than the other, alignment is almost certainly the cause. You might also notice that your steering wheel is not centred when you are driving straight — it may be slightly rotated to the left or right. Any of these symptoms warrant a visit to a tyre professional for an alignment check.

How Misalignment Wastes Fuel and Money

When your wheels are misaligned, your tyres are essentially dragging slightly rather than rolling freely and evenly. This increased rolling resistance means your engine has to work harder to move the vehicle forward, which directly increases your fuel consumption. Studies have shown that even a small misalignment can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent.

On top of that, misalignment dramatically shortens the lifespan of your tyres. Tyres that should last 50,000 kilometres or more can wear out in half that distance if alignment is not maintained. When you consider the cost of a full set of quality tyres, a regular alignment check is a very small investment by comparison.

When to Get an Alignment

As a general rule, you should have your wheel alignment checked every 10,000 kilometres or at least once a year — whichever comes first. However, there are certain situations where you should get an alignment check sooner. If you have hit a significant pothole, run over a kerb, or been involved in any kind of collision (even a minor one), it is worth having your alignment checked.

You should also get an alignment whenever you fit new tyres. Starting with properly aligned wheels ensures your new tyres wear evenly from day one and last as long as possible. If you have had any suspension or steering components replaced, an alignment is essential to ensure everything is set correctly.

Benefits of Proper Alignment

Keeping your wheels properly aligned delivers a range of benefits. Your tyres will last significantly longer, saving you money on premature replacements. Your vehicle will handle better, with more predictable steering and improved stability — especially at highway speeds and in wet conditions. You will also enjoy better fuel economy, as your tyres roll with less resistance.

Perhaps most importantly, proper alignment keeps you safer. A well-aligned vehicle responds more predictably in emergency situations, giving you better control when you need it most.
