5 Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing

5 Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing

Your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, which makes them one of the most important safety components on your car. Despite this, many drivers overlook tyre condition until something goes wrong. Worn or damaged tyres can significantly increase your stopping distance, reduce grip in wet conditions, and put you and your passengers at serious risk.

Knowing when it is time to replace your tyres can save you money in the long run and, more importantly, keep you safe. Here are five clear warning signs that your tyres are due for replacement.

1. Low Tread Depth

Tread depth is the most important indicator of tyre health. In Australia, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm across the full width of the tyre. However, most tyre professionals recommend replacing tyres once they reach 3mm, as performance in wet conditions drops significantly below that point.

An easy way to check at home is the coin test. Place a 20-cent coin into the main tread groove with the platypus facing down. If the tread does not reach the platypus bill, your tyres are getting low and should be inspected by a professional. Most modern tyres also have built-in tread wear indicators — small raised bars within the grooves. When the tread surface is level with these bars, the tyre has reached its minimum safe depth and must be replaced immediately.

2. Cracks or Bulges in the Sidewall

The sidewall is the vertical surface of your tyre between the tread and the wheel rim. Take a close look at it from time to time. If you notice small cracks, cuts, or splits running along the sidewall, this indicates that the rubber is beginning to break down. This can be caused by age, UV exposure, or simply general wear.

Bulges or blisters on the sidewall are even more concerning. A bulge indicates that the internal structure of the tyre has been compromised, usually from impact damage such as hitting a pothole or kerb. A tyre with a sidewall bulge is at serious risk of a blowout, which can be extremely dangerous at highway speeds. If you spot any bulging, have the tyre replaced as soon as possible — do not drive on it any longer than absolutely necessary.

3. Excessive Vibration While Driving

Some vibration is normal when driving, especially on rough roads. However, if you notice a new or worsening vibration through the steering wheel or the vehicle itself, it could be a sign of tyre trouble. Excessive vibration can indicate internal tyre damage, such as a belt separation or deformation inside the tyre that is not visible from the outside.

It can also point to balance issues, worn suspension components, or misalignment — all of which contribute to uneven tyre wear and shorten the life of your tyres. If the vibration is persistent, have your tyres and suspension checked by a professional to rule out any safety concerns.

4. Tyres Older Than 5–6 Years

Even if your tyres look fine on the surface and still have plenty of tread, the rubber compounds in tyres degrade over time. Exposure to heat, sunlight, and the elements causes the rubber to harden and lose its flexibility, which reduces grip and increases the risk of cracking or blowouts.

Most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres that are more than five to six years old, regardless of tread depth. You can check the age of your tyres by looking at the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. For example, "2319" means the tyre was made in the 23rd week of 2019. If your tyres are approaching or past the six-year mark, it is wise to have them inspected and plan for replacement.

5. Uneven Tread Wear

If you notice that certain parts of your tyres are wearing down faster than others, this is a strong sign that something else is going on with your vehicle. Wear on the outer or inner edges typically points to a wheel alignment issue. Wear in the centre of the tread can indicate over-inflation, while wear on both outer edges may suggest under-inflation.

Uneven wear not only shortens the lifespan of your tyres but also compromises handling and safety. Regular tyre rotations and keeping your alignment and tyre pressures in check can help prevent uneven wear. However, if the damage is already done and the wear pattern is significant, replacing the affected tyres and addressing the underlying cause is the best course of action.
